I think of these pictures as glances -- each describing elements in our field of vision, but ones we tend not to focus on; scenes we perhaps glimpse while on our way to something else. One goal is to capture unintended visual rhythm. My hope is that my viewer will move easily from the picture itself to a symbolic or personal place. I often hear from viewers that they are sure they know the places pictured here. Perhaps they do. But more often than not, the places recalled and the places pictured have a great physical distance between them.
Any neighborhood or town or community has the potential to be presented visually in such a way that can pull us in and make us curious, make us question or make us pause, or make us remember. My hope for these pictures is that the viewer will be drawn in and will linger.
The pictures in this series are created from film, and are hand-printed in a color darkroom. The size of the prints is approximately 3x2.5 inches.
